WYOMING SUICIDE PREVENTION

The State of Wyoming Suicide Prevention Program provides an array of services in the prevention of suicidal behaviors across the lifespan. Components of this program include
Funding and oversight of seventeen county suicide prevention task forces; providing technical assistance and training to agencies, organizations and individuals; maintaining the state suicide prevention website and suicide prevention plan; submission of annual reports to the Wyoming Legislature; collaboration with communities and other stakeholders in development, implementation and evaluation of suicide efforts; and carrying out the Division’s five-year strategic plan for suicide prevention. The State of Wyoming Suicide Prevention Program is led by the Division’s Suicide Prevention Team Leader, who receives advice and counsel from the Suicide Prevention State Task Force.

The Wyoming Youth Suicide Prevention (WYSP) Initiative is a three-year program funded by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) with the goal of reducing suicidal behavior among the target population of youth age 10-24. Overall funding from SAMHSA for the three year period of October 1, 2006 thru September 30, 2009 is $1.2 million. Components of the WYSP Initiative include funding and supporting community-based and school-based youth suicide programs; sponsoring conferences and trainings related to youth suicide prevention; designing, implementing and evaluating a statewide social marketing campaign; and establishing and supporting the Wind River Indian Suicide Prevention, Intervention, Referral and Education (INSPIRE) initiative.   The WYSP Initiative is led by the Division’s Suicide Prevention Team Leader, in partnership with the Wyoming Youth Suicide Prevention Advisory Council.

• The Wyoming Department of Health has partnered with Family Services to offer suicide prevention training; training has been conducted in juvenile detention facilities as a result

• The Wyoming state legislature has expressed interest in adding suicide prevention to its agenda through the Public Health Committee; Representative Dan Zwonitzer introduced House Bill 0223 establishing a suicide prevention program in the state Department of Health

• The Task Force continues to meet on a periodic basis and has consulted with SPRC on developing an outcome-based state plan; the Task Force will also be involved in a logic model exercise over the next year
